  • Fertilisation
    1. Pollen grain germinates after landing on the stigma.
    2. Each pollen grain grows a pollen tube with the male gamete in the tube.
    3. Pollen tube grows down the style into the ovary.
    4. Pollen tube enters the ovule through the micropyle.
    5. Pollen tube bursts and releases the male gamete into the ovule.
    6. Fertilisation occurs when the male gamete’s nucleus fuses with the ovum’s nucleus.
    7. The ovary becomes a fruit, and the ovule becomes a seed.
  • After fertilisation
    • ovary becomes fruit
    • ovule becomes seed
    • zygote becomes embryo
    • petals, style and anthers wither and drop off
    • Stigma withers but remains on fruit
    • flower stalk becomes fruit stalk
  • Inside seed
    • The cotyledons provide food for the seed when the seed germinates.
