Allows for the message of the DNA to be transcribed, and occurs in the nucleus.
Translation
The synthesis of a polypeptide using info from RNA. Occurs in ribosomes, and a nucleotide sequence becomes an amino acid sequence
mRNA (messenger RNA)
Synthesized during transcription using the DNA template. It carries info from DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm
Triplet code
The sequence of nucleotides that code for proteins. Read in groups of 3. 64 triplets
Template Strand
Since DNA is a double helix, only one strand can make the mRNA. This is the template strand because it provides the pattern
Codons
Nucleotide triplets. They code for AA.
61 for AA, 3 are stop codons.
Met/AUG is the start codon
Redundancy: more than one codon for each AA
Reading Frame
Codons must be read in the correct groupings during translation to synthesize the correct proteins. If it shifts by one nucleotide, it will produce different outcome
3 Steps to Transcription
Initiation, elongation, and termination
After all modifications in eukaryotes, the pre-mRNA is now mature mRNA and can leave the nucleus, to proceed to cytoplasm for translation at ribosomes
