  • 1)Measure 100cm3 of water using a measuring cylinder and pour into a conical flask.
    -Note the initial temperature of the water.
  • 2)Set up a clamp and retort stand to hold the conical flask so its about 1.5cm from the wick.
  • 3)Light the wick and start the stop watch, when 1 minute has passed put the cap back on the wick.
    -Measure the final temperature.
  • Hazards: Open flame from wick -> put cap on when finished
    Hot water -> wear goggles
  • Alcohols- methanol, ethanol etc
    Foods- carbohydrates, lipids, proteins
    hydrocarbons- petrol, paraffin wax
