  • The police

    Between 2010 and 2018 the police budget was cut by 18% and the central goverment funding was cut by 30%. Some funding has been made up by the local governments. This led to a 20k fall un police officers and a national shortage of detectives. The police started to drop more cases. In 2018, the MPS dropped 2.6x as many cases as in 2016. The police may be tempted to drop more serious cases as they take longer to investigate. For example, rape takes on average 129 days to investigate while theft or criminal damage takes 2.
  • The CPS

    Between 2010 and 2018 CPS budged fell by 25% and lost 1/3 of its staff. In 2018 the CPS and the police were failing to work effectively due to shortages. The CPS has been accused of downgrading charges so that cases could be prosecuted in magistrates' courts since its quicker and hence cheaper. However, this means that offenders get off with lighter sentences.
  • Prisons
    Between 2010 and 2018 prisons budget fell by 16% and staff fell by 15%. Many of experienced staff left the service. Critics argue that prisons are in crisis with rising level of assaults, self-harm. Overcrowding means that prisoners lack activities that would rehabilitate them. Recidivism rate is around 60% within a year of release for short sentences. In 2016 the UK saw the worst prison riot in 25 in HMP Birmingham, orivationsation might have contributed to it.
  • The NPS

    In 2019 there was a national staff shortage and over-reliance on agency staff; sub-standard perfomace of the CRCs; shortcomings in keeping victims safe.
