  • Fine skill - Intricate movement and small muscle groups. An example is A snooker shot.
  • Gross Skill - large muscle groups used. For example Shot-put throw.
  • Open skill - affected by the environment. For example open water swimming.
  • Closed skill - Not affected by the environment. For sample 100m indoor swim.
  • Discrete skill - Clear beginning/ end. For example A serve in tennis.
  • Continuous skill - No clear start/end. For example a long distance runner.
  • Serial skill - Several discrete movements - sequenced. For example triple jump.
  • Self-paced - Performer has the rate at which the skill is carried out under control. For example A javelins throw or golf shot.
  • Externally paced - control over the rate is not held by the performer. For example returning a serve in badminton.
  • Complex - Lots of decisions need to be made, may involve sub-routines, timing and spdeed may be crucial. For example lay up in basketball through lots of defenders or a pass in rugby as you attack the defensive line.
  • simple - Little information, few decisions to be made, speed and timing not crucial. For example, a free throw in basketball o the start to a sprint.
  • High organisation - Movemnt skills wher sub-routines are very closely linked together, difficult to separate without disrupting the skill. For example, dribbling in basketball/football.
  • Low organisation - Made up o sub-routines that are easily separated and practised by themselves. For example a triple jump.
