  • Turkey built Ataturk Dam on the river to generate electricity and irrigate crops.
  • Happened between 1983 and 1990.
  • Turkey completely stopped the flow of water to fill the reservoir, blocking Syria and Iraq's access.
• Results:

  • Syria and Iraq protested due to the disruption.
  • The flow of the Euphrates is now 1/3 of what is once was.
  • Reduction of supply has hindered the potential economic development of the countries.
