    the prison service is part of his majesty's prison and probation service (HMPPS). this is a government agency responsible for the uk's prisons
  • aims and objectives
    • protect the public from harm
    • help people who have been convicted of offences to rehabilitate so they can contribute positively to society
    • hold prisoners securely and implement the sentences and orders of the courts
  • HMPPS describes i
    ts main purpose as being to ' prevent victims by changing the lives of offenders'
  • funding
    paid for by the government out of general taxation
    • 2018 total budget was £3 billion
    • average cost of keeping a prisoner in prison in 2019 = £42,000
  • category A (high security)

    hold highly dangerous individuals, very secure to prevent their escape
    e.g. murderers, rapists, terrorists
  • category B
    do not require maximum security, but still difficult for potentially very dangerous offenders to escape
  • category C (last of the closed prisons)

    individuals cannot be trusted to be in an open prison, still potentially dangerous but not likely to escape
  • category D (open prison)

    individuals can be reasonably trusted to not try and escape
  • incentives and earned privileges scheme (IEPS)

    basic- limited letters visits
    standard- allowed o spend money on what they earn
    enhanced- additional privileges e.g. TV in cell (depends on the prison)
