Hitler's Foreign Policy

Cards (8)

  • Non-Aggression Pact (1934): Hitler accepted the border between Germany and Poland and promised not to take back the 'Polish Corridor'
  • Anglo-German Naval Agreement (1935): Made German Navy 35% of UK. Satisfied UK but worried France and Italy as Navy would be bigger than TofV said
  • Rearmament (1935): In 1933, Hitler secretly made plans to triple the army. He ordered 1,000 aircraft to be built. This was made public in 1935. Conscription would increase army size to 550,000
  • Rhineland (1936): In March, Hitler sent 22,000 troops and a small number of aircraft to the Rhineland. This went against the TofV and Locarno Treaty (1925, stated that borders must be respected). UK & France didn't retaliate. UK believed Germany were taking back what belonged to them. A 25 year non-aggression pact was signed between the countries
  • Anschluss (1938): Hitler wanted German speakers in one area. Germany invaded on 12 March. Opposition were killed or worse. In April, a plebiscite was taken and 99.75% agreed to be part of Germany. UK protested but didn't stop it
  • Czechoslovakia (1938): Post-War, new borders meant there were 3 million German speakers in the Sudetenland. Hitler encouraged the Nazi Party to call for the area's independence
  • Munich Agreement (1938): Sudetenland was heavily fortified and had raw materials which couldn't be lost. Neville met Hitler on 15 September and Hitler discussed his intentions. UK and France forced Czecho to give Hitler what he wanted. Hitler wanted more
  • The Munich Agreement was a deal signed on the 30 September between 4 main powers. The land became German owned and if Czech fought back they wouldn't be supported, however UK and France guaranteed that the rest would be independent. A declaration was signed stating that UK and Germany would never go to war
