Cards (26)

  • Heart
Muscular organ that pumps blood through the circulatory system
  • Heart rate
Number of beats of the heart per minute
  • Adrenaline
A hormone that can increase heart rate
  • Coronary circulation
Blood is circulated through the cardiac muscle of the heart
  • Cardiac muscle
The muscle tissue of the heart
  • Aorta
Main artery that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the body
  • Vena cava
Large vein carrying deoxygenated blood to the heart
  • Right atrium

Upper right chamber of the heart that receives deoxygenated blood from the vena cava
  • Left atrium
Upper left chamber of the heart that receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins
  • Right ventricle
Lower right chamber of the heart that receives blood from the right atrium and forces it into the pulmonary artery
  • Left ventricle
Lower left chamber of the heart that receives blood from the left atrium and contracts to force it into the aorta
  • Bicuspid valve

An atrioventricular valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle which prevents backflow.
  • Septum
Wall of tissue that separates the left and right side of the heart
  • Coronary heart disease
A narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart
  • Tricuspid valve

An atrioventricular valve, being situated between the right atrium and the right ventricle. Prevents backflow of blood.
  • Semilunar valves

Pulmonary and aortic valves located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery and between the left ventricle and the aorta. Prevents backflow of blood.
  • Hepatic vein
The vein that collects blood from the liver and returns it to the heart
  • Hepatic artery

Supplies oxygenated blood to the liver
  • Hepatic portal vein
A vein connecting the capillary bed of the intestines with the capillary bed of the liver.
  • Renal vein
Blood vessel that carries blood away from the kidney and toward the heart
  • Renal artery
Blood vessel that carries blood to the kidney
  • Vein
Blood vessel carrying blood towards the heart
  • Artery
Blood vessel carrying blood away from the heart
  • Capillary
A tiny blood vessel (one cell thick) where substances are exchanged between the blood and the body cells.
  • Pulmonary circulation
Circulation of blood between the heart and the lungs.
  • Systemic circulation
Circulation that supplies blood to all the body.
