  • How had communication and power of state changed by 1914?
    No longer assumption war could be fought without state control, a high level of state intervention was deemed necessary. Communication and encouraged nationalism and commitment to victory
  • Power of state?
    Increased eg opening up rural aes by roads and railways, telephone and telegraph help control population, increased police powers
  • Relationship between state and industry?
    With a powerful state greater state control of resources was an easier transition. Increased to help wage war that demanded massive weapons in limited space on Western Front
  • Civil liberties?
    Repression and brutality- nations warring started to have little respect for the rights of civilians
  • Role of workers for the state?
    More women worked in heavy industry and there was a demand fro nurses
  • Experience of war for civilian population?
    Housing + services neglected, high tax, food shortages, gov involvement dictated war was fought on the home fronts
  • State organisation?
    • more difficult to escape control of more powerful state so desertion was more challenging
    • efficient taxing systems made raising money easier
    • development of railways made military movement easier eg French army Parisian cabs 1914 on way to Marne to move soldiers
    • DORA 1914- control of population, conscription 1916, rationing 1918
  • Changes to nature of warfare?
    • Civilians seen as enemy
    • food shortages due to German blockade and vice versa
    • entire nation felt impact
