  • What did the Prussians master?

The integration of technologies eg the electric telegram (accurate deployment, quicker deployment and coordinated movement of units) and railways (large troop numbers, greater distance and greater speed). These technological developments necessitated development and changes in strategic planning. The development of planning in this regard is undoubtedly important and although not solely responsible for either victory or defeat in the Wars of Unification, it is nonetheless a very important component.
  • Successful use of new technology?
Railways and electric telegraphs. Troops arrive quicker to battle. Prussian forces have quick, decisive victories in 1866 and 1870-71. New technology and refinement of mobilisation plans allowed Moltke victory in Sadowa 1866 where 250,000 men were brought to a front of 300 miles by 5 separate rail lines which was improved further in 1870
  • Ineffective use of technology?
Railway- Austrian reserve force 1866 got lost and missed battle of Sadowa. French armies found guns and much of their ammunition had been left behind before Sedan
  • Impact of new tech on war plans?
Impact on Sadowa 1866 was big- mobilisation plans were refined and new tech was integrated to move troops via railway. Railway failures show that new tech relied on proper use because both sides had them
  • Prussian victories inspired what?
    WW1 plans with railways
  • What other factor influenced the plan to strategically use railways for rapid mobilisation?
Technology- Moltke made effective use of the technology available eg railways which were at the centre of his plans
