  • World Blood Donor day takes place on June 14 each year. The aim is to raise global awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion and of the critical contribution voluntary, unpaid blood donors make to national health systems.
  • Of the 118.5 million blood donations collected globally, 40% of these are collected in high income countries, home to 16% of the world's population.
  • An increase of 10.7 million blood donations from voluntary unpaid donors has been reported from 2008-2018

  • Section 2: Declaration of Policies
    • to promote and encourage voluntary blood donation by the principle that blood donation is a humanitarian act
  • Humanitarian act: doing blood donation to promote human welfare, save lives, relieve suffering and maintain human dignity
  • Legal principle of blood transfusion is a professional medical service and not a sale of a commodity
  • Formal and Non-formal education are allowed to teach the benefits and rationale in the existing health subjects
  • Restraining commercial blood banks - blood donation is not considered as business
  • Commercial Blood bank exists for profit
  • Blood collection unit is an institution of facility duly authorized by the department of health to recruit and screen donors and collect blood
  • Walking blood donor is an individual included in the list of qualified voluntary blood donors referred to in section 4 who is ready to donate blood when needed in his/her community
  • Voluntary donation shall be promoted through:
    • Public education
    • Promotion in Schools
    • Professional education
    • Establishment of blood services network

  • Criteria for Donor Selection
    • Age: 17-65 years old 16 below needs parents concern
    • Weight: 50kgs or 110lbs
    • Hemoglobin: > 12.5 g/dL
    • Hematocrit: > 38%
    • Tempt: Oral temp not to exceed 37.5 C or 99.5 F
    • Pulse: 50-100 beats / minute

    - AABB: 180 mmHg - Systolic; 100mmHg Diastolic
    - Philippines: 90 - 160 - Systolic; 60 - 100 diastolic
  • Skin lesions is cause for indefinite deferral
  • Temporary deferral
    • active disease under treatment like cold, flu, tb, syphilis, infections
    • Curable disease of: heart, lung, kidney, liver, gastrointestinal tract; treatment with antibiotics
  • Three years deferral
    • immigrant
    • refugee coming from an area considered endemic for malaria
    • three years after departure
    • three years after becoming asymptomatic
