conflict

Cards (11)

  • conflict- para 1
“Big as a tractor, so big I can smell the machinery inside” This simile provides us with the impression that the nurse rarely shows real and true human emotions and may even lack a heart like a machine as even her actions are seen as “automatic” as if she is robotic and cold hearted
  • conflict-para 1

“a ball-cutter" this metaphor depicts her as having the ability to intimidate her male patients which may be described as taking away their masculinity which McMurphy is not blind to
  • conflict para 2
“Bunch of chickens at a peckin’ party” he symbolism of this metaphor shows that other patients are constantly in competition and are trying to bring each other down in a bid for validation from the nurse as she has methodically crushed their self-esteem so they rely on her.
  • conflict para 2
"a good strong wolf" They believe she is needed to teach them their place which shows the success of the nurse in making the patients rely on her
  • conflict para 2
“I’m a gambler and I'm not in the habit of losing” his shows the conflict between McMurphy as they are both aiming to achieve polar opposite goals as McMurphy wants freedom for all the patients whereas the nurse wants them all to conform and it shows that McMurphy is determined to stop the nurse and to break the delusion to the patients of how unstoppable she is.
  • conflict para 3
“You're not gonna beat me. I’m gonna beat you.” These short sentences show McMurphy’s desire to win and portray that he is confident he will do so. Not only this but it shows the finality of his point as if to say he will beat her if it's the last thing he does, showing how much conflict there is between him and the nurse.
  • conflict para 3
"You’re not just a nurse, you’re a goddam dictator!” This exclamation shows how McMurphy is not afraid to call the nurse out and is trying to reveal the truth behind her actions and isn’t there to help them.
  • conflict para 3
“Your attempts to disrupt this institution will not go unnoticed or unpunished” his shows that the nurse is not willing to let McMurphy tear down what she has spent so long meticulously building and is willing to hurt McMurphy as he threatens and disrupts her wicked method of conformation. This shows the confrontation between the two and how both are so strong willed that neither of them is willing to back down even though they will get hurt in the process.
  • conflict para 4
"I will not tolerate such disruptions.” This shows that McMurphy has finally broken the nurse and shows how she has now become aware of how Mcmurphy is in danger of destroying her idea of conformity.
  • conflict para 4
“Big nurse could use it as an example of what can happen if you buck the system” This shows how the nurse thinks she has won against McMurphy as he can longer rebel against the system after EST and a lobotomy but she is mistaken as McMurphy has already managed to achieve his goal of bringing the other patients to freedom and giving them a voice as the chief does a mercy killing to save McMurphy’s dignity
  •  conflict para 4
“Clear” they have been brought out the metaphorical fog which represents their fear and how they want to hide from the nurse and combine which shows McMurphy won in the end as although he didn’t make it alive, he sacrificed himself for the other patients.
