Body wide system of nerves that collect, process and deliver information via electrochemical messages
Central Nervous System
Involves complex processing using the brain and spinal cord for all conscious and some unconscious processing and reflex movement
Peripheral Nervous System
Network of messenger neurons
Sensory: afferent, to CNS
Motor: efferent, away from CNS
Autonomic Nervous System
Part of the PNS that controls internal glands in the involuntary system
Somatic Nervous System
Part of the PNS, controlling skeletal muscles in the voluntary system
Sympathetic Nervous System
Part of the ANS, increasing bodily activities e.g. releasing noradrenaline in fight or flight, increasing heart/sweat/breathing rate and dilating pupils
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Part of the ANS, decreasing bodily activities e.g. releasing acetylcholine to active rest and digest, decreasing heart/sweat/breathing rates and constricting pupils
Homeostasis
Regulation of internal body environment using sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
