    Marriage talks are negotiated which sparks the Wyatt rebellion, creating anti-spanish xenophobic attitudes

    Mary and Phillip are officially married creating instant hostility from courtiers. Phillip was to spend as little time in England as possible

    Made restoring England to Catholicism increasingly difficult as England was in direc conflict with the Papacy
  • English declaration of war against France (April 1557)
    England declares war against France after a bizarre Scarborough raid.
    -> French troops were led by Thomas Stafford who may have been set up by Paget, being the most anxious minister for war.
    -> English troops were sent to northern France alongside Spainish troops
  • Loss of Calais (Jan 1558)

    Due to the war against France, Calais was lost forever due to the absence of Spain
    -> tried to claim the port of Brest but was unsuccessful. Essentially clutching at straws
    Extremely embarrassing loss, was Henry VIII's prize overseas territory
