A study can be duplicated in method and/or analysis
Replicability
A study about a phenomenon produces similar results from a previous study of the same phenomenon
Direct replications
Studies that replicate the exact procedures that was carried out in the original study as closely as possible
Conceptual replications
Studies that aim to replicate the hypotheses pertaining to the conceptual variables, but may deviate from the original study in the measures or manipulations
Replication + Extension
Studies that replicate the original findings and examines additional hypotheses/variables that were not tested
The Reproducibility Project (2015) found that only ~1/3 of 100 replicated studies from 3 different journals replicated
Perhaps some difference between studies
Or perhaps the effect didn't exist in the first place
Generalizability
Ecological validity - whether a laboratory study generalizes to real-world settings
