  • After the battle of Gaugamela, Alexander advances to Persepolis
  • Darius put Persian satrap, Ariobazarnes, in command of the Persian army
  • When Alexander got closer to the gates, he refuses to send scouts ahead. The sun also obstructed their view of the Persians who were on the top of the hill

    Arrian does not mention this to avoid acknowledging Alexander's mistakes
  • The Persians on the hill attacked the Macedonians and Alexander ordered a retreat - first time we see Alexander do this
  • Macedonian army set up camp and discussed what to do. A shepherd (Arrian - Prisoner) had told Alexander about a secret route which led to the Persian camp where he could attack from behind
  • Alexander split his army into two and left some with Craterus at the camp to light fires as decoys whilst he advanced through the secret pass.
  • During the night, Alexander snuck through the mountain pass and managed their way behind the Persian camp and they were trapped - Alexander behind and Craterus at the front
  • When Alexander got into got into Persepolis he:
    • Burnt down the Persian palace - despite being told not to by Parmenio
    • Stole treasury from Pasagardae
