  • "chit of bone", "the china plate", "the relic of a finger" - Dehumanise the soldiers. The alliterative "ch" sound creates a rhythmic sound drawing attention to the delicate nature of bone.
    the noun "chit" refers to something being owed suggesting that people owe Earth to clean up the mess they created thanks to war.
  • "blown and broken bird's egg of a skull" - The plosive sounds of "blown" "broken " "delicate" here again it shows the destruction of war on nature. The juxtaposition of "egg" and "skull" against the "blown" and "broken" shows the fragility and preciousness of life.
  • In stanza 2 Sheers also uses asyndetic listing of metaphors to show the extent of the damage caused by the war.
