Cards (32)

  • The respiratory system is the organs and other parts of our body involved with breathing, when you exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide
  • Parts of the upper respiratory tract

    • Nose and nasal cavity
    • Sinuses
    • Mouth
    • Throat (pharynx)
    • Voice box (larynx)
  • Parts of the lower respiratory tract

    • Windpipe (trachea)
    • Diaphragm
    • Lungs
    • Bronchial tubes/bronchi
    • Bronchioles
    • Air sacs (alveoli)
    • Capillaries
  • How the respiratory system works

    1. Bronchial tubes divide into smaller air passages called bronchioles
    2. Bronchioles end in tiny balloon-like air sacs called alveoli
    3. Alveoli are surrounded by capillaries
    4. Oxygen from inhaled air passes into blood
    5. Blood carries oxygen to heart
    6. Heart pumps blood with oxygen through body
    7. Cells use oxygen and produce carbon dioxide
    8. Blood carries carbon dioxide back to lungs
    9. Carbon dioxide is removed when you exhale
  • Other tasks of the respiratory system include warming up air, moisturizing air, protecting airways, and allowing you to smell and talk
