Jewish beliefs

• Jews = largely opposed to euthanasia - active euthanasia seen as murder.
• All life = precious (created imago dei) and gift from God - doesn’t belong to us, cannot end it, only God can decide when it ends.
• Every moment of human life, considered equal in value to many years of life ( one hour of life, same as seventy years).
• Talmud says, both the living and the dead are accountable to God - euthanasia can’t be seen as escape from God’s judgement.
• Medicine that relieves pain can be administered, even if brings death quicker as side affect - importance = intention - if intention is to reduce pain, then it’s accepted.
• Jews can pray to God to end persons pain and sufdering, but any action taken to deliberately shorten or end one’ s life = wrong.
• Some Jews believe life support machine cab be turned off of patient has no chance of recovery.
• Believe doctors shouldn’t make person suffer more by artificially extending their life.
