  1. from march to may the sun heats up land quicker than the sea
  2. by the end of may, temperatures on land are very hot while the sea is 20 degrees cooler. the warm air is less dense so it rises and a low pressure zone is created which acts as a vacuum
  3. the cooler moist air from the indian ocean is drawn up over the land to fill the low pressure zone
  4. the moist air is forced to rise over the himalayan mountains and as the air cools it condenses to form heavy rain.
  5. as the sun loses strength during september, the land cools, the wind changes and the dry season begins again
