Mandibular canines

Cards (12)

  • The mandibular canine has a longer crown dimension compared to the maxillary canine, and any other tooth
  • Generally it is smaller, slender, and more symmetrical compared to the maxillary canine
  • Lingually, the mesial side from crown to root forms a straight line, while the line from crown to root buccally forms a C-shape
  • The incisal edge is located more lingually to the long axis (general feature of mandibular anterior teeth)
  • The maxillary canine has a sharper and more pointed cusp
  • Facially, both maxillary and mandibular canines have a pentagonal outline
  • The cusp of the mandibular canine is shorter and the contact areas are more coronally located
  • The cusp of the maxillary canine occupies at least 1/3 of the crown and the contact areas are more cervically located
  • The mesial ridge of the mandibular canine is much shorter than the distal cusp ridge
  • Maxillary canines have a more prominent cingulum, marginal ridge, and lingual fossa
  • Incisally, the mandibular canine is more symmetrical as the maxillary canine has a distal bulge
  • The incisal ridge is thicker on the maxillary canine and the facial ridge is more prominent
