Cards (8)

  • The Big Three at the Paris Peace Conference were Woodrow Wilson (USA), Georges Clemenceau (France) and David Lloyd George (Britain).
  • The Big Three had very different agendas: France to punish Germany, USA wanted peace and to prevent another war and Britain needed Germany's economy to recover.
  • June 1919 - The Treaty Of Versailles was signed to punish Germany: 66 billion in reparations, reduced Germanys land by 25%, Germany's army to be reduced to 100,000 men, 6 naval ships and no air force, Germany was forced to accept war guilt and the Treaty of Versailles was set up all though Germany was not aloud to join.
  • Many Germans saw the Treaty of Versailles as a betrayal
  • League of Nations was established to maintain peace. It had a Council, an Assembly, a Refugee and Health Committee…
  • The League did not have an army and the USA did not join – the US Congress opposed it
  • The League was left in the hands of Britain and France – who did not have the money or will power to make a major impact
  • Other post-war treaties agreed at the Paris Peace Conference included the Treaty of St Germain (Austria) where Austria was forbidden to unite with Germany and the Treaty of Neuilly (Bulgaria) where their army was reduced to 20,000.
