Source of energy

Cards (15)

  • Non-renewable energy

    • Fossil fuels (Natural gas,coal,oil)
    • Nuclear energy
  • Fossil fuels

    • Takes hundreds and thousands of years to make more
    • Made from dead organisms
  • Nuclear energy
    • Runs through fission (process of splitting uranium atoms for energy)
    • The heat released by fission is then used to create steam to run turbines
  • Renewable energy
    • Wind turbines
    • Solar power
    • Hydroelectric dams
    • Tidal barrages
    • Biomass
  • Wind turbines

The wind activates the generator within which converts kinetic to electrical energy
  • Solar power
    Directly from sunlight
  • Hydroelectric dams

Trapping water that come from upstream, prevent the flow of water towards the ocean for accumulation- reservoir
  • Tidal barrages

    1. It traps water that come from left or right for a higher water level
    2. Difference in height make water contain huge amount of gpe (higher pressured for a greater power to rotate the turbines) for electricity directed with a penstock (Kinetic energy turning into mechanical energy)
    3. Force of water spines turbines connected to generators and generates electricity then the water used flows back to the other side or needs to be pumped (hydroelectric since it comes for a upwards stream) and the cycle moves again
  • Hydroelectric dams are released, it goes down due to gravity while the tidal barrages goes left or right to the lower water level
  • These energy don't consume energy,it is simply borrowed temporarily and then returns back to its source
  • Biomass
    1. Made from the recent waste of plant and animal
    2. Plant waste or animal waste( bacteria eats the waste turning it to methane gas ) is used to burn water for it to create steam to activate turbines for generators
  • Although the burning of waste produces greenhouse gas but it is still green because the carbon emissions from burning are balanced by carbon uptake from the plant for photosynthesis
  • Biomass process
The plant uptakes carbon dioxide for its growth and source of energy - photosynthesis but when burned the same amount of CO2 is then released back into the environment (so no extra CO2)
  • Biomass is consider better than fossil fuels
  • In chemical symbol equations, it must be balanced
