Crisis in the Balkans

• The Balkan crisis took place in 1908 to 1909
• Nationalism


  Sense of national consciousness
• Most Serbian and Russian populations were slavic so the two countries shared a natural bond and similar patriotic feeling
• Serbia was still part of the ottoman empire
• 'Eastern question'


  Concerns that a collapse of the Ottoman empire in the Balkans could cause tension between Russia and Austria-Hungary
• Austrai-Hungary opposed Balkan nationalism because it had many slavic people in it's empire who might want to break away
• Austria-Hungary saw slavs as an inferior race
• Some slavs carried out acts of terrorism aginst Austria-Hungary
• Austria-Hungary felt confident to attack Serbia because they were backed by Germany
• Austria-Hungary and Russia had agreed to support eachother claims on Balkan areas but Austria Hungary entered Bosnia-Herzegovina without permission from the Russians.Austria Hungary then annexed(stole)Bosnia and Herzegovina which sparked outrage in the slav people
• The annexing of Bosnia and Herzegovina caused Serbia and Montenegro to prepare for war aginst Austria-Hungary .The Russains supported Serbia and Montenegro in support of the slavs
• After the annexing of Bosnia and Herzegovina Serbia wanted to go to war with Austria-Hungary but couldn't without the support of Russia.Russia wouldn't go to war because Geramany said they would support Austria-Hungary
• The crisis in the Balkans resulted in Austria Hungary paying compensation to the Ottomans for taking Bosnia-Herzegovina
• Serbia and Russia were determined to win the next dispute after the crisis in the Balkans
