Lady Macbeth is reading a letter from Macbeth which tells her about the prophecies and her partial fulfilment.
She expresses her determination that the third prophecy will also come true.
However, she also believes Macbeth is incapable of murdering Duncan so decides to try to spur him on.
A messenger arrives informing them Duncan is on his way to Inverness.
Lady Macbeth knows this is ideal for her plan and wants to exchange her femininity for evil.
Macbeth arrives.
