  • Groups - smaller units of society unit of interacting personalities with an
    interdependence of roles and statuses
  • Types of Group

  • Primary Group - small, intimate and less specialized group, members engage in emotion-based interactions over
    extended period of time
  • Secondary Group - large and impersonal social group members pursue a specific goal or activity involves weak emotional ties
  • In-Group - member can identify themselves within that group individuals feel at home
  • Out-Group - individuals feel like they do not belong due to differences
  • Reference Group - one we consciously or unconsciously refer when we
    evaluate our life situations and behavior but to which we do
    not necessarily belong.
    individuals use them as basis for what someone aspires to be role model
  • Network - series or web of social ties involving people or groups of
    individuals connected to each other
  • KINSHIP - bond of blood or marriage which binds people together
  • DESCENT - refers to the origin or background of a person in terms of
    family or nationality

    Matrilineal Descent- individuals belong to their mother's kin but not their father’s
    Patrilineal Descent- belonging to father’s kin

  • Monogamy - the practice of having only one spouse
  • Polygamy - individual is married to more than one person at a time
    Polygyny - one man marries more than one woman
    Polyandry - one woman marries more than one man
  • Group Marriage - marital arrangement of three or more adults
  • Endogamy - marriage within their own clan or ethnic group
  • Exogamy - marriage outside one's clan or ethnic group
  • Arranged Marriage - marriage arranged by the parents of the groom & bride
  • Referred Marriage - marriage referred by people who act as “matchmakers”
