  • word root:
    • the foundation of the term
    • either body part or action
    • there may be more than one
  • prefix:
    • added to the front of the term
    • not needed
    • adds meaning of location, number or time
    • a hyphen follows it (when written)
  • suffixes:
    • attached to the end of a term
    • adds meaning of: condition, disease, procedure
    • all medical terms must have one
    • it is written with a hypen before it
  • adjective suffixes can convert a word root into a complete word
  • combining vowel:
    • makes pronunciation easier
    • mostly an -o
    • needed when combining two roots
    • needed when a suffix that follows the root begins with a consonant
  • -graphy: the medical exam while -gram: a written record of a medical exam
  • in order to translate a medical term we start from the suffix and then the prefix
