  • Pathogens are microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease
  • Bacteria make you feel ill by producing the toxins that damage your cells and tissues
  • Viruses live inside cells and replicate themselves using the cells' machinery. The cells then burst and then release new viruses. This damage makes you feel ill
  • All protists are eukaryotes, but not all eukaryotes are protists
  • Some fungi are single-celled. Others have a body which is made of hyphae.
  • These hyhae can grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants. They can also produce spores, which can spread to other plants and animals

    • Water - drinking or bathing in dirty water
    • Air - pathogens can be breathed in
    • Droplets - Airborne pathogens carried when you cough or sneeze
    • Direct contact - Touching contaminated surfaces
