White blood cells

Cards (7)

  • White blood cells engulf foreign cells and digest them, this is known as phagocytosis
  • Every invading pathogen has unique molecules, called antigens, on its surface
  • When the wbc comes accross a foreign antigen, they produce antibodies to lock onto invading cells so they can be found and destroyed by other white blood cells
  • The antibodies produced are specific to the type of antigen
  • Antibodies are then produced rapidly and carried around the body to find all simmilar bacteria or viruses
  • The wbc's can rapidly produce antibodies to kill a pathoge, they become naturally immune to that pathogen
  • Wbc's counteract toxins produced by invading bacteria by producing antitoxins
