  • Family and friendship groups
    The primary group based on social bonds, marriage, or adoption. E.g family, siblings, children etc.

    • Based on a geographical area in which the group originated or developed. Members share social and traditional characteristics. E.g dancing club, Japanese language group

    • Based on peoples wellbeing and if it is satisfied or not. E.g support groups

    • These groups are formed by people who live in the same specific region. E.g a bushwalking group may form in the Blue Mountains by residents in that area
  • Gender
    • Marketing and media are more aimed at specific genders. Events and venues may be more attractive to one gender than the other or may be restricted on the basis of gender; for example, gyms
  • Shared interest/common goal
    • Individuals seek out others with similar interests and goals and form groups based on these similarities. E.g women who attend a weight loss group
  • Security
    • Community health, emergency and welfare services work to enhance this need. Individuals are most likely to choose to form groups by living in close proximity to others to feel safe and secure. E.g aging individuals may choose to live in a retirement village or enclosed compounds to feel a greater sense of security
  • Sexuality
    • LGBTQI individuals may form social groups as a result of their shared values, beliefs and experiences
  • Specific needs
    • Based on their economic, physical, cultural, intellectual and socioeconomic situations. E.g many local communities and welfare groups provide the opportunity for reformed alcoholics, gamblers and drug addicts to meet to work through their problems
  • Social interaction
    • Some groups form as a way of just connecting in friendship groups. E.g colleagues may get coffee together during their breaks and teenagers may meet up at shopping centres
  • Religion
    Groups may be formed through religion by individuals who all follow the same values and belief system which connects them on a spiritual level. E.g a group of people who go to the same church may have a bible study group that they meet in
  • Culture
    • Formed by people that share the same practices or traditions in their country or origin. They form groups to celebrate their culture. E.g Chinese New Year, food festivals, cultural dance groups
  • Other
    • Groups may be formed in order to heighten self esteem and confidence. Which means individuals will join a group to increase their power/status, which may help them achieve self actualisation. E.g someone who loves sport may reach self transcendence when they realise their goal of coaching a team
