  • anglo saxon law enforcement - tithings
    tithings were a group of 10men.
    these men were responsible for eachother
    if one was accused of crime, the rest had to take him to court or theyd pay a fine
    sheriff later on appointed by community to meet up w a man from the tithing regularly
  • hue and cry

    if one witnessed a crime, the whole village was expected to chase after the suspect.
    if one person didnt get involved, the whole village would be expected to pay a fine

    trial by ordeal took place in church courts.
    church courts were more leniant as they wouldnt execute criminals
  • trial by local jury
    jury made up of local men from tithing who knew accuser and accused, they would decide whether one was innocent or guilty.

    if a norman was killed and the suspect wasnt found, the saxons in the hundred that the body was found were all to be expected to pay a fine
