the transfiguration

Cards (6)

  • Son of God
Jesus' identity as the divine Son of God
  • The Transfiguration confirms the identity of Jesus as the divine Son of God. Jesus completely changes from human to divine in front of Peter, James and John. He shares his divine identity with them, but they cannot understand what they have just witnessed. The appearance of Moses and Elijah pointed to the fact Jesus was fulfilling Old Testament prophesies. However, Jesus also reminds the disciples that he will suffer and die. Moses and Elijah both suffered for their faith and Jesus, as the Son of God, also must suffer
  • God's words are like those spoken at the Baptism. This and the cloud indicate God's presence. The words left the disciples in no doubt Jesus was the divine Son of God
  • The Transfiguration must have reassured Jesus that he was following the right path. God assures Christians that Jesus is the Son of God through his statement - This is my Son. It is an insight into the divine nature of Jesus as God's son
  • The Transfiguration also reminds Christians that discipleship includes sometimes seeing or experiencing great spiritual events
