For each test you need
To break up a piece of food using a
pestle
and
mortar
Transfer ground up food to a
beaker
and add some
distilled water
Give mixture a good stir with a glass rod
Filter
solution
Benedicts
test
Prepare a food sample and transfer 5cm^3 to a test tube
prepare a water bath at
75
degree celsius
Add some
Benedict's
solution to the test tube (10 drops)
Place test tube into
water bath
and leave for 5 minutes (Test tube facing away)
If Sugar is present with
benedicts
solution it will turn from
BLUE
to green,yellow or brick red depending on sugar content
Starch Test: Add
iodine
solution to food sample. If starch is present, the solution will turn
blue-black.
Biuret Test:
Prepare food sample and add
2cm^3
to test tube
Add
2cm^3
of
biuret
to the test tube and mix by gently shaking
Biuret's Solution will turn from blue to
purple
if
proteins
are present
Sudan
III test
Prepare a sample of food and transfer 5cm^3 to a test tube
Use a pipette to add 3 drops of Sudan III and gently shake
Sudan III forms a
separate
red layer if
lipids
are present
