Cards (5)

    • LANDSLIDE
    • A _________ is the mass movement of rock, soil, and debris down a slope due to gravity.
    • It occurs when the driving force is greater than the resisting force. It is a natural process that occurs on steep slopes.
    • The movement may range from very slow to rapid. It can affect areas both near and far from the source.
  • Tsunami
    • _______ is a series of sea waves commonly generated by under-the-sea earthquakes and whose heights could be greater than 5 meters.
    • It is erroneously called tidal waves and sometimes mistakenly associated with storm surges.
    • Tsunamis can occur when the earthquake is shallow-seated and strong enough to displace parts of the seabed and disturb the mass of water over it.
    • Liquefaction
    • Earthquake motion can turn loosely packed, water-saturated soil to liquid— "liquefaction.”
    • Liquefied soil becomes less compact and ultimately lose the ability to support roads, buried pipes, and, of course, houses.
    • It is caused by vibration or saturation with water which causes the soil to decrease in density.
    • This poses danger for it led to unstable structures of buildings due to ground subsidence.
  • Fire
    • Even moderate ground shaking can break gas and electrical lines, fuel lines, and overturn stoves.
    • To further complicate things, water pipes rupture, so it would be impossible to extinguish the fire.
    • Seismograph
    • A ________ is an instrument used to record and measure the motion of the ground during an earthquake.
    • It consists of a stationary base and a suspended weight or mass that remains stationary during an earthquake but records the motion of the ground.
