Cards (3)

  • What are mixtures?
    • Mixtures consist of two or more elements or compounds which are not chemically combined
    • The components of a mixture retain their own properties
    • E.g. in a mixture of iron and sulfur. The iron is still magnetic and the sulfur is still yellow
    • Mixtures can be separated by physical separation techniques
  • What can physical separation techniques be used to separate?
    • Physical separation techniques can only be used to separate mixtures
    • They cannot be used to separate the elements in a compound
  • In physical separation techniques, are new substances/products made?
    • Physical separation techniques do not involve chemical reactions
    • So this means that no new substances are made
