  • main idea - the main point or central idea in a paragraph
  • topic sentence - states the main idea (found in the beginning, middle, end)
  • supporting details - explains the main idea of the paragraph
  • cohesion - refers to the unity of ideas in a paragraph

  • coherence - the quality of being logical and well-organized (follow a certain logical order)

  • introduction - prepares the readers for the information that they are about to read (contains thesis statement, states the main idea)
  • body - develops the thesis statement
  • conclusion - ties the ideas in the text together and leaves the reader with a sense of completion
