• voting can be seen as a civil service just like jury duty
• people will be more likely to educate themselves if they have to vote
• people do not have to vote for someone they don't want to e.g. in Australia they can spoil a vote
• political apathy is a real issue - the TO in 2017 election was 68.7%
• would have to be responsive of different shades of opinion if the vote is compulsory
