token ring topology

• In a token ring topology, computer systems are connected in a ring or loop
• Advantages of a token ring topology:

  • Data collisions are avoided as data packets are transmitted in one direction
  • Attaching more systems to a ring topology won't affect transfer speed as much as other layouts
• Disadvantages of a token ring topology:

  • If any system on the network fails, the whole network fails
  • Adding a new system requires the network to be temporarily shut down
• Ring networks have one directional communication through a cable. The message is received by each computer in the ring between the sender and receiver
• data is transmitted from one device to the next in a sequential manner. 
• → Packets go from a device to another until it reaches recipient and gives a token to transmission-
