  • "It's a mug's game. The punter canny win."
    Billy is more realistic than Davie, and he's frank with him. Gambling will benefit the bookie, not Davie.
  • "He'll get on a lot better if you screw the heid, right?"
    Billy is blunt with Davie - stability, not uncertainty, will help Alec to thrive.
  • "Ah'll take it away wi me. Get it done this week."
    Billy, unlike Davie, is a man of action - he makes a promise and gets underway.
  • "They catholics have made it bad."
    Billy is prejudiced, attaching negative connotations to the colour green because of his religious affiliation.
  • "...there's yer yacht. A blue and white it is!"
    Billy, unlike Davie, fulfils his promise to Alec. 
  • “ah had a word wi that bookie."
    Again, we see Billy's decisiveness. He cares about his brother and does what he can to help.
  • "We never died a winter yet, eh?"
    Billy maintains an optimistic outlook in response to his brother's gloom.
