Fuel Cells

Cards (9)

  • Fuel cell
A cell that generates electricity through a chemical reaction, using a fuel such as hydrogen
  • Hydrogen fuel cell
    1. Hydrogen molecules split into hydrogen ions and electrons at the negative electrode
    2. Oxygen molecules combine with the electrons and hydrogen ions at the positive electrode to form water
  • The only waste product of a hydrogen fuel cell is water
  • Hydrogen fuel cells
Use two simple gases, hydrogen and oxygen, to produce electricity
  • Advantages of hydrogen fuel cells
    • Produce electricity for as long as hydrogen is provided
    • Do not get less efficient the longer they run
    • Can be a source of drinking water
  • Disadvantages of hydrogen fuel cells
    • Hydrogen is an explosive gas and difficult to store safely
    • Produce a relatively low potential difference or voltage
  • Rechargeable batteries
    • Can store less electricity the more charging cycles they go through and eventually need to be replaced
    • Can produce a greater potential difference than a hydrogen fuel cell
  • Some types of rechargeable batteries can catch fire if not manufactured correctly
  • Dangerous fuels are not required with rechargeable batteries
