Cards (5)

  • define innate behaviour
    • not learned
    • genetically determined response to a stimulus
    • significance lies in survival value
    • conscious areas of brain do not have to play a part
    • 4 types of innate behaviours
    Kineses
    Taxes
    Simple reflexes
    Instinctive behaviour
  • Define kineses
Response is related to intensity of NON DIRECTIONAL stimulus
Involves a change in rate of movement/change in rate of turning
    EXAMPLE:
Woodlice: dry environment, turn away, damp environment, go towards/rate of movement decreases
  • Define Taxis
Response, direction is determined by direction of stimulus
Movement of whole organism TOWARDS or AWAY from DIRECTIONAL STIMULUS
  • Define simple reflexes
Automatic, rapid response to a stimulus e.g in a dangerous situation
  • Define instinctive behaviour
    Sophisticated, unlearned behaviour
Have a lot of survival value
The same behaviour can be seen across a species
    E.g mating, defending territory
