Cards (12)

  • "Let me not to the marriage of true mindes" - People should not marry on the basis that they are similar minded. Their love should be portrayed through actions rather than words. Rejects the marriage of Daisy and Tom, who although are similar "careless people" they both willingly commit infidelity on eachother, revealing that their actions don't portray true love.
  • "Love is not love which alters when it alteration findes" - True love is defined by partners both being able to overcome the adversity in the relationship to ultimately remain lovers without consideration. Ironically supports Tom and Daisy's marriage, as they "retreated back into their riches" as they were before all the chaos unfolded.
  • "It is an ever fixed marke" beginning of the metaphors that Shakespeare uses to express the significance of true love. Refers to a lighthouse. Lighthouses guide ships and withstand storms. Reflects how Gatsby and Daisy's relationship is not true love. The green light across the dock is artificial. Gatsby has put himself across the bay to examine her house from afar on purpose. The "ever fixed marke" is also out of reach for Gatsby, and his "trembling hands". He reached out to grasp it, but he couldn't quite get a hold of it (true love)
  • "That lookes on tempests and is never shaken" - The lighthouse should be able to withstand the storm of adversity that may face the relationships way. Well, this is not the case for G and D because given the conflict between Gatsby and Tom developing in chapter 7, Daisy's love for Tom is made relatively clear "Even alone i can't say i never loved Tom" and Daisy's love for Gatsby is instantly vanished.
  • "The star to every wandering bark" - Religious imagery of the star of Bethlehem which guided the three kings to the manger. This does not relate to Tom who has a restless eye, which "drift(s) on forever seeking" He is not captivated by the love of Daisy enough to settle his agitated persona.
  • "Lov's not Time's fool" Love will outlast the inevitability of death. Time is capitalised to show personification which highlights it's importance. When Gatsby dies, Daisy does not continue loving him. She doesn't even phone Gatsby's house regarding the funeral or his welfare. According to Shakespeare, this is not true love.
  • "Through rosie lips and cheeks" - beauty fades, love does not.
  • "Within his bending sickles compasse come" - The Grim Reaper reaps when the relationship is broken and vulnerable, not when time says so. Much like when Tom and Daisy reinstate their "unmistakable air of intimacy" after Myrtle dies, their relationship blossoms once again. Gatsby has no place here, he will die.
  • "Even to the edge of doom" refers to the last day/the day of judgement. Doomsday. God will decide whether or not these lovers had true love and devotion to eachother.
  • "Let me not the marriage of true mindes Admit impediments" Legally binding marriage doesn't define true love - it's the combination of like-minded people who are truly devoted to one another.
  • Neat structure highlights the essence of true love - that it has to be organised to prevail. Octave, volta, sestet, Three quatrains, Rhyming couplet. Iambic pentameter is used to mimic the heartbeat. 3/4 of the words used are monosyllabic. This highlights the synonymous nature of this universal human experience
  • AO5: Tucker Brooke "110 of the simplest words in the language and two simple rhyme schemes to produce a poem.. Strangeness of perfection"
