Chemistry- Reactions

Cards (13)

  • Oxidation is when a substance react with oxygen to form a compound
  • Test for oxygen:
Insert a glowing splint into the gas, if the gas is oxygen, the splint will relight
  • metal oxides are basic, they react with acids and neutralise them. Some metal oxides dissolve in water to produce alkaline solutions.
( neutralise means balances out with a solution )
  • General equation for oxidation:
METALS + OXYGEN --> METAL OXIDE
  • Non-metal oxides are acidic- they react with bases and neutralise them. Some non-metal oxides dissolve in water to produce acidic solutions.
  • combustion is the burning of fuels to release energy
  • Test for Carbon Dioxide:
white precipitate is formed after being bubbles through limewater
  • Test for water:
anhydrous cobalt chloride paper ( blue to pink )
  • Word equation for combustion:
Hydrocarbon + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water
  • Incomplete combustion is when there is a poor supply of oxygen and carbon monoxide is produced
  • Word equation for Incomplete combustion:
Hydrocarbon + oxygen --> water + carbon dioxide + carbon monoxide
  • An exothermic reaction is a reaction that releases energy to the surroundings.
  • An endothermic reaction is when energy is taken in from the surroundings.
