Bond energies refers to the amount of energy needed to break one mole of a particular covalent bond.
Breaking bonds is an endothermic process
Forming bonds is an exothermic process
To determine wether an overall reaction is endothermic or exothermic you have to compare the total bond energies of the breaking products and the forming reactants.
When calculating an overall reaction if the total is negative then the reaction is exothermic, but is the total is positive the reaction is endothermic.
