Bond Energies

Cards (5)

  • Bond energies refers to the amount of energy needed to break one mole of a particular covalent bond.
  • Breaking bonds is an endothermic process
  • Forming bonds is an exothermic process
  • To determine wether an overall reaction is endothermic or exothermic you have to compare the total bond energies of the breaking products and the forming reactants.
  • When calculating an overall reaction if the total is negative then the reaction is exothermic, but is the total is positive the reaction is endothermic.
