Training

• The Judicial Studies Board is responsible nationally for training.
• Initial training - Basics of the role and then sit in court with 2 trained magistrates.
• 2. Mentoring - A trained mentor guides through first 6 months, 6 formal mentored sittings in the first 12-18 months. A personal development log will be kept.
• 3. Core training - Every Magistrate is given a core workbook for further optional study.
• 4. Consolidation training - At end of first year, prepare for first appraisal.
• 5. First appraisal - When successful in trained magistrate observing their competence they are deemed fully competent.
• 6. Ongoing training and development - Additional training for youth court work and continue with appraisals.
