  • the renal artery transports blood towards arterioles that lead into the kidney. the arteriole branch off into smaller capillaries that travel to nephrons in the kidney.
  • at the start of a nephron capillaries twist into a tight knot called the glomerulus where high blood pressure forced fluids out of the capillary into a cup shaped structure called the Bowman's capsule. Red blood cells and proteins are too large to leave the glomerulus and thus remain in the blood. They only escape the glomerulus and enter the filtrate if there is a problem such as high blood pressure.
