Stage 1 : Neurogenesis

Cards (7)

  • STAGE 1: NEUROGENESIS
    • neurogenesis -is made up of the words “neuro” meaning “relating to nerves” and “genesis” meaning the formation of something.
    • differentiated will undergo mitosis to produce either stem cells, or neuroblasts,
    • cells continue dividing until they eventually form what is called the “ventricular zone,”
    • This ultimately leads to the formation of three separate zones: the
    • ventricular zone,
    • intermediate zone,
    • marginal zone.
  • CELL DEATH - large numbers of cells die in the process known as "apoptosis" it means falling leaves
  • neurotrophin - Substance released by target cells that contributes to the survival of presynaptic neurons.
  • nerve growth factor (NGF) - The first identified neurotrophin.
  • caspase - An enzyme within a cell that cuts up DNA and produces cell death.
    • When neurotrophic factors bind to receptors on a neuron, caspase activity is inhibited, and the cell survives.
  • Cell death gene - A gene responsible for triggering the activity of caspases, leading to apoptosis.
  • Cell death - serves important functions in the developing nervous system.
    • Too many surviving cells might result in problems.
