how effective was the gov use of arts and culture?

• prolekult: proletarian culture. workers and peasants advised to develop their own culture, this was a direct challenge to higher class art
• avante garde: gov tried to enforce the new soviet culture on the people. in theatre v.meyerhold led a movement who produced a fantasy of workers defeating their exploiters.
• krush banned boris pasternaks dr zhivago as it contained criticisms of the ussr. the book however was smuggled abroad in 1957
• the trial of sinyavsky and yuli daniel 1966> both write novels describing the harsh realities in the ussr and were arrested under article 70
• most artists preferred to conform and avoid trouble with the authorities. non conformists were often viewed as out of touch with soviet life
