  • Christians believe that Jesus was sent by God to save humanity from sin, and he died on the cross as an act of sacrifice.
  • Goals of Christianity
    • Enter the kingdom of heaven - Living out the teachings and actions of Jesus will help us get into heaven
    • Create the kingdom of God on Earth - Jesus's teaching lived out on Earth through a collective group of people
  • The Ten Commandments
    • I am the LORD your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me
    • You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain

    It is a set of rules/laws that we as Catholics need to abide by
  • Covenant
    A sacred agreement between God and the Jewish people
  • Judaism & Christianity both believed in one God
  • They believed in a divinely inspired moral law
  • God Invites them into a covenant relationship
  • Torah
    The law of God revealed in the first 5 books of Jewish scriptures and the bible. We believe it contains divinely inspired morals from God
  • There are 613 mitzvot (Commandments) which cover all aspects of life/guide to moral behaviour
  • 10 commandments = 10 important Mitzvot
  • Main ideas of Judaism and Christianity
    • Torah = Law
    • God creates people who can love God and others (Jesus fulfils it)
    • Jesus would send God's spirit to transform hearts
    • Constant rebellion against Torah - People believed it was suggesting they needed "new hearts"
  • "Love your lord your God with all your heart and with all your mind' this is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it. 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' All the law and the Prophets hand on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37-40): 'Jesus means that the other commandments may cease to exist as they are rooted in the commandments above. It is the role of the Prophets to preach the commandments and teach others to love God and others.'
  • Beatitudes
    A series of statements provided by Jesus during "The Sermon on the Mount" that state qualities that Christians must have to be blessed and rewarded
  • Beatitude
    Complete happiness that comes from being blessed by God
  • There are two different versions of the Beatitudes. Matthew has 9, whereas Luke has 4.
  • Purpose of the Beatitudes
    Beatitudes are a model for social and spiritual justice in society. From a Christian perspective, the Beatitudes teach that people are blessed even during difficult times since they will spend forever in heaven.
  • The 9 beatitudes - (Matthew 5:3-11)
    • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
    • Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted
    • Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth
    • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled
    • Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy
    • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God
    • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God
    • Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
    • Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me
  • Counter culture
    • To go against society norms (What majority of society is doing)
    • Your beliefs, values and actions differ to those dominant in society
    • Characteristics: Reject societal norms, embrace alternative lifes, challenge authorities
  • Jesus was counter culture - His treatment of the poor and outcast differed & his message of inclusivity and love of enemies. He emphasised inner purity and spiritual growth & confronted religious and political establishments by saying numerous counter cultural statements "Father, forgive them for they know not what to do." (Luke 23:45)

  • Slavery, exodus, and freedom

    • Israelites enslaved in Egypt
    • Moses leads the exodus to freedom in the promised land
  • Deuteronomy 15:15: 'Remember that your were a slave in the land of Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you; for this reason, I lay this command on you today'
  • Desert, wilderness and promised land
    • Desert - place of refuge (Place of darkness and loneliness)
    • Wilderness - Search for God try to find meaning through their understanding and learning of Yahweh, God, (Green, lively, happier)
    • Promise land - Reward of God's holy land (Throughout the bible goal of the israelites is to achieve and enter the promised land)
  • Exile and return
    The first account of exile occurred in the book Genesis with Adam and Eve - They needed to follow God's one command not to eat the apple. Adam and Eve were then exiled - sent out of the Garden of Eden.
  • Genesis 3:23: 'So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.'
  • Christ as the Messiah
    • The belief that Jesus was the anointed one who would save humanity
    • We believe that he would be the saviour which he does in salvation. He saved everyone from sin when he died on the cross (took all the sins into hell for three days then is resurrected)
  • Discipleship
    • A follower of Jesus (believed he is the anointed one who would save humanity)
    • In Christianity the disciples refer to a follower of Jesus who has dedicated their life to serving him. Apostle was the original one who was at Jesus's last supper. Disciples are followers e.g us.
  • Salvation
    • The belief that Jesus died to save humanity from sin
    • He saved everyone from sin when he died on the cross (took all the sins into hell for three days then is resurrected)
    • God gave his only son to save humanity from sin.
  • Kingship/Kingdom of God
    The kingdom of God refers to God's reign on earth and consequently, in our hearts. It is about His kingship and our obedience to His rule. In His kingdom, the first shall be last, the broken are blessed, we look out for our neighbour and we rejoice when the lost are found.
  • Covenant
    A sacred agreement between God and his people in which God makes promises to his people and, usually, requires certain conduct from them.
  • Revelation
    The disclosure of divine or sacred reality or purpose to humanity. Revelation is always a call to God's shalom, and faith is the active response to that call
  • Sacraments of healing
    Reconciliation & anointing of the sick
  • Sacrament
    A religious ceremony or ritual of the Catholic Church that is an outward and visible sign of a spiritual grace/gift (e.g God's forgiveness)
  • Grace
    The undeserving unlimited love that God shows us. It is the goal of Christians to be worthy of this love
  • Reconciliation
    The sacrament of Reconciliation is a Christian ritual that allow shumans to recieve God's forgiveness fot their sins - forgiving and bringing people together
  • You have sinned and are wishing for forgiveness (any story where Jesus forgives)
  • Repairs damage relationship with Jesus
